Year 5 - Bikeability Featured

Written by  on Monday, 20 March 2017.

This week, Year 5 are participating in Bikeability – a cycle training programme which will enable them to gain practical skills and understand how to cycle confidently on roads.  Amethyst and Tanzanite classes will be given the opportunity to complete Bikeability Level 1 and Level 2, each designed to improve cycling skills regardless of what is known already.

Today (Monday), the children will learn at Level 1 starting with the basics of balance and control. They will be instructed to master their bikes in the Year 5/6 school playground away from traffic. At Level 1, the girls and boys will be learning to do the following:

  • prepare yourself and your bike for cycling
  • get on and off your bike without help
  • start off, pedal and stop with control
  • pedal along, use gears and avoid objects
  • look all around and behind, and control the bike
  • share space with pedestrians and other cyclists

During the remainder of the week (Tuesday-Thursday), the children will be venturing onto the local roads of Cambourne for Level 2 which will give them a real cycling experience. They will learn in small groups how to deal with traffic on short journeys cycling to school and back.

At Level 2, the Bikeability instructors will be teaching Year 5 to:

  • prepare for on-road cycling
  • start and finish an on-road journey
  • recognise typical hazards
  • let others know what you are about to do
  • know where to ride on the road
  • pass parked vehicles and side roads
