Year 5 - Vikings Featured

Written by  on Tuesday, 10 October 2017.

This Autumn term, the Vikings have arrived in Year 5! Amethyst and Tanzanite classes have been investigating the fascinating life and culture of the Vikings and the Anglo-Saxon struggle for the English kingdom; learning about their origins, ships, customs, diet, clothing and the runic written alphabet known as the futhark.

Armed with their terrifying Kennings, the children have been sailing in 30 metre long Viking longships designed to fit 70 fearless warriors and fitted with shrouds, cutwaters, yard prows, fierce prowheads to terrify enemies. The longships had clinker-built hulls which allowed for great speed, flexibility and strength in stormy seas. They were among the first ships to have a keel which provided more stability in rough weather enabling a smooth and quick journey.

They have created Viking helmets and shields that any self-respecting Freya the Fearless, Stig the Stabber, Floki the Furious, Ruthless Ragnor, Brenna the Brave would be proud to own for their epic journey from battle to Valhalla.

Examples of our Viking Kennings:

Dangerous-spinner,

Sword-flyer

Whole-maker,

Fast-killer,

Heart-stopper,

Sharp poker,

Long-needle,

Sharp-bender.

Face-masher,

Poison-burster,

Terror-butchers,

Chopper-face,

Monk-murderer,

Blood-burster,

Warrior-assassin,

Serial-killer.
