Ocean Adventurers!

Written by  on Monday, 22 February 2016.

The Reception children at The Vine have been busy Ocean Adventurers this half term! We started the term exploring what we can find under the sea. We role played deep sea diving in the submarine amongst the dangling jellyfish, cereal starfish and number squid made in class.

Violet the giant purple octopus even came to live on the ceiling of Ruby class and we wrote her messages. We also held a real squid and a real octopus and were amazed see the tentacles and suckers up close.

To extend our learning we started to read stories about pirates: scary pirates, friendly pirates, girl pirates, even baby pirates. Then one day a pirate left a treasure map at school! We opened it up and were excited to find that there was treasure hidden right here in the Vine School. Everyone used the treasure map and followed stick arrows to find the hidden treasure in the pirate ship outdoors – of course!

As a celebration of our learning, we had a dress up Pirate Day. Everyone looked fantastic in costume and some children had even grown beards and got scars overnight! We all made up pirate names and sang and danced to pirate songs. Everyone also took part in the Swashbuckle Challenge. Each ‘pirate’ stepped, jumped and balanced along the assault course then ran to find the hidden treasure in the school grounds. It was great fun! In the afternoon, we had a pirate picnic and ate home-made sandwiches together. What an arrrrggghh-mazing day!
