Brilliant Bronze Age in Year Three

Written by  on Monday, 05 December 2016.

Year Three have had an exciting few weeks learning about life in the Bronze Age. Firstly, we researched Stonehenge and its significance as a world famous prehistoric monument. We visited Cambourne’s very own stone circle and collected similes, alliteration and amazing adjectives to help us create a descriptive piece of writing.

This week we visited Flag Fen, a Bronze Age site near Peterborough. We went on a tour of the site and learnt about how people lived in Prehistoric times. We saw some real Bronze Age boats and learnt how they are being preserved in wax. In the Bronze Age, Flag Fen was a very important place. There was a huge bridge built across the water which archaeologists think took 60,000 trees to build! We were so lucky to be able to see what remains of this bridge because archaeologists think that it will have completely decayed in 30 years. We were also able to experience what it was like in a Bronze Age roundhouse. We listened to a Bronze Age myth and made a wish on the magic sword from the story!

We also became trainee archaeologists for the day. We were able to take part in an archaeological dig in Flag Fen’s Dig Tent. We learnt how to use the equipment properly and then in teams we found lots of exciting artefacts from the past. We thought carefully about what these artefacts meant and how they could have been part of life thousands of years ago.
