Exploring Our Community

Written by  on Wednesday, 19 November 2014.

We began Year 2 exploring our new classrooms; we thought about how we would create a happy and safe learning space and what we could use to help us remember The Vine School rules. We reflected on what it means to be a church school and the many different communities we belong to.

We learnt the definitions of lots of new words to help us learn and play effectively in groups; including discussion, negotiation, compromise and co-operation. We explored our school environment using our newly acquired skills of map and compass reading and used our teamwork skills to crack orienteering codes. In our school grounds we investigated different materials and discovered many beautiful autumn objects which we used to create our own natural sculptures, inspired by Andy Goldsworthy.

As this year commemorates 100 years since the beginning of the First World War, we thought about how we remember special occasions and discovered why the poppy is used for remembrance.

Is it a Solid, a Liquid or Both?!

The final week of the half term transformed Year 2 into a science laboratory. We were investigating solids and liquids and their properties and got very messy; baking cakes; melting chocolate and mixing slime!

Remembrance Day - 11th November 2014

Having learnt about Remembrance Day and why we wear poppies last half term Year 2 were pleased to be invited to the Year 6 Service of Remembrance on Tuesday. We listened carefully and reflected on poems and hymns Year 6 performed and we also shared some of our memorial thoughts. Then we watched Year 6 ‘plant’ their ceramic poppies in our Thinking Courtyard.
